Off late, I have been sharing new patterns for the male adult beanie. With March month being focused on women, I thought it will be a lovely idea to show some attention towards men. LoL! Actually, there’s nothing as such.
The real reason behind making more designs for the male category is to create my portfolio touching all the streams possible.
Well, these are unisex designs. My focus is to come up with a pattern that can be made for all gender and for any age group. Hoping that you all find it extremely easy.
The texture will be noticeable if you choose solid coloured yarns. For multi-coloured or ombre styles, the weaving will be subdued.
Process:
Abbreviations:
- FPDC: Front Post Double Crochet stitch

Starting with Magic Circle, DC 12 times and Joining with Slip Stitch (SL ST).
R1: Ch 2, (DC, FPDC) in each DC, join on top with SL ST -> 12 DC, 12 FPDC.
R2: ch 2, (FPDC, FPDC) in DC, DC in FPDC, repeat –, join on the top with SL ST -> 24 FPDC, 12 DC.
R3: ch 2, (DC, FPDC) on FPDC, DC on FPDC, FPDC on DC, repeat –, join on the top with SL ST -> 24 DC, 24 FPDC.
R4: ch 2, 2 FPDC on DC, DC on next FPDC, (FPTRC on DC, DC on next FPDC)3 times, repeat –, join on the top with SL ST -> 24 DC, 30 FPDC.
R5: ch 2, (DC, FPDC) on FPDC, (DC on FPDC, FPDC on DC)4 times, repeat –, join to the top with SL ST -> 30 DC, 30 FPDC.
You can stop here if the desired circumference is achieved.
R6: ch 2, 2 FPDC on DC, DC on next FPDC, (FPDC on DC, DC on next FPDC)4 times, repeat –, join on the top with SL ST -> 30 DC, 36 FPDC.
R7: ch 2, (DC, FPDC) on FPDC, (DC on FPDC, FPDC on DC)5 times, repeat –, join to the top with SL ST -> 36 DC, 36 FPDC.
You can repeat R6 and R7 and increase from 72 to 84 count to get the required circumference.
R8: ch 2, FPDC on DC, DC on FPDC, repeat –, join to the top with SL ST -> 36 DC, 36 FPDC.
R9: ch 2, DC on FPDC, FPDC on DC, repeat –, join to the top with SL ST -> 36 DC, 36 FPDC.
Repeat R8 and R9 alternatively, till you get the desired length.
Add a Single Crochet Row in the end to snug the edging perfectly.
Caution Section:-
- Concentrate on the initial incremental rows as they will bring out the smooth flow of the design.
- Once the final count is achieved, i.e. 8″-9″ for the adult females and 9″-10″ for the adult males, proceed with the last row.
- The final count should be an even number to incorporate the sequence correctly.
- to increase or decrease the size of the beanie, extend or reduce the rows. Here, either you can stop at R5 or R7 or add 6+6 in next 2 rows.
- In case you have a habit of working tight tensions then choose the crochet hook 1-2 size bigger than the recommended one. Like in this case, I chose 6mm while the recommended size is 5mm.
Product Specifications:
Defining Dimensions:-
- Height: 9.5″
- Circumference: 23″-24″
The sizes could be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.
Optional Alterations:-
- For edging, you can use fur, Crab Stitch, Herringbone Half Double Crochet (HHDC) or Slip Stitch of same or contrasting colours.
- You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
- You can increase the Brim by more than 1 row to define a brim.
Remember: do not over accessorise it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!

Hi Apeksha, I’m currently working on this pattern but I don’t understand what you mean by FPDCon DC? Is this a spelling mistake or a new stitch for me to learn?
Kind Regards
Catherine
Hi Catherine,
FPDC on DC means work Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC) on Double Crochet (DC) of previous row.
Thanks.
