Crochet Tangerine Punch Travel Pouch Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Tangerine Punch Zipped Pouch

Brownfield and Greenfield; these words are often used in business. But they very much apply to my work as well. Brownfield is working on an existing project/site, while Greenfield is a new project or site. In my world of crochet, a brownfield is continuing a theme or a pattern, or even improvising on something existing, whereas any new project is Greenfield for me.

What do you think is the trickiest work – starting a new pattern or continuing a theme? For me, the latter is more difficult than the former. While working on a new pattern for a new customer I have to just take care of his/her ideas (which is not so easy as it sounds) and present them the final item (which they have loved till date, TOUCHWOOD!!)

But when an existing customer comes back with more demands; it becomes challenging for me. I have to give something new and exciting. The visualization becomes more arduous when I have to maintain the same theme but still provide a unique punch. The faced the same challenge while creating this Tangerine Punch Zipped Pouch. I have to not only make it funky and attractive but also ensure that it blends together. Is it confusing?

Well, let me share the pictures and hopefully, it will be clearer. After making a mobile cover with blue and coffee brown tint, I made a multi-colour sunglasses cover to go with it.

When the need for a Travel Pouch or makeup kit pouch arose, I confidently promised to make something peppy but still combine them with previous items.

Now the engine started. With so many colour choices around, I played and tried a dozen combinations and patterns. Finally, I arrived at below selection. I was overjoyed with this achievement. But here comes the hiccup. The calculation went wrong! Now I am on the verge of completing this project and the yarn is over and the size is smaller!!!

At this juncture, I am contemplating to undo the pouch and start from scratch again but at the same time, I do want to let my hard work go in vain. So I am experimenting again with an extension. Hopefully, my customer will love it the way she has loved all my other products.

Process:

The pattern is very simple (I know I always say this, but believe me once you get hold of the basic stitches of crochet, it is really simple). The pouch is a combination of Single Crochet (SC), Center Single Crochet (CSC), Back Loop Single Crochet (BLOSC) and SC-2-Together (SC2TOG) stitches.

Pattern:-

Colour Selection – Blue Yarn(BC) for base or side circles. Multi-colour yarn (MC), tangerine (TC) and yellow(YC) for the body.

Base:-

Starting with a Magic Circle and using BC, Ch 1, 6 SC; join at the beginning SC with a Slip Stitch (SLST). Total 6 SC.

Increase every row by 6 till you reach a total of 54 SC.

To know how to increase every row, click  Grandpa Beanie.

End Row: Back-loop SC (BLOSC) in every SC; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 54 BLOSC.

Body:-

1: Select MC and start working on CSC around;  join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 54 CSC. Check out the video from Moogly to get the stitch.

2: Continue Row 1 for another round. Total 54 CSC.

3: Using MC, start another round of CSC. Do not join the ends. turn and Ch 1. Total 54 CSC.

4: Continue Row 3 for another 5 rows.

5: Switch to TC and continue Row 3 for another 9 rows.

6: Switch to YC and Continue row 3 for another 9 rows.

7: Switch to TC again and continue row 3 for another 9 rows.

8: Switch to MC back and continue row 3 for another 5 rows.

9: Repeat row 3; join at the beginning CSC with SLST.

10: Ch 1, Repeat row 9. Total 54 CSC.

11: Change to BC; Ch 1, start working on SC in every CSC; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 54 SC.

12: working on Back Loop, Ch 1, continue SC in every SC; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 54 SC.

Base:-

13: decrease the count now.  Ch 1, SC in 7 SC, SC2TOG next 2 SC; repeat ; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 48 SC.

14: Ch 1, SC in 6 SC, SC2TOG next 2 SC; repeat ; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 42 SC.

15: Ch 1, SC in 5 SC, SC2TOG next 2 SC; repeat ; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 36 SC.

16: Ch 1, SC in 4 SC, SC2TOG next 2 SC; repeat ; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 30 SC.

17: Ch 1, SC in 3 SC, SC2TOG next 2 SC; repeat ; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 24 SC.

18: Ch 1, SC in 2 SC, SC2TOG next 2 SC; repeat ; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 12 SC.

19: Ch 1, SC2TOG next 2 SC; repeat ; join at the beginning SC with SLST. Total 6 SC. Sew the end and pull tightly to close.

Buy the zip and revert the inside out and sew the zip. Change back to right side.

Caution Section:-

  1. CSC will become tighter to work on as we are working with cotton yarn. The elasticity of the cotton yarn is nearly zero.
  2. To make a closed loop, a smaller hook can work better than the recommended one. For me, I went with the suggested hook because working on the next row was getting tighter.
  3. To measure the gauge up to 1″, count the number of rows. Here, it took 6 rows to make an inch.
  4. As I miscalculate the gauge, I had to buy another yarn and include in the product. But it is always important to count your gauge to avoid such blunders.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Length: 9″
  • Base circumference: 5″

Optional Alterations:-

  • Add different charms on the zip. I have made a mini ball with the base colour and added in the zip puller.  Free pattern to make the mini ball.
  • Choose different colour combinations for the pouch.
  • You can add tassels or pompom on the zip puller. Link to create pom-pom / DIY-Tassels.
  • You can attach a plain key-ring too.
  • The size of the pouch can increase or decrease. Focus on the base count and make the item your own.
  • Insert a lining to avoid the small items falling out. Since the pattern is close-knit stitch and the purpose of the pouch does not deal with any mini item. I haven’t added any liner.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegance simplicity!!
