Have you visited Yellowstone National Park? I haven’t, it is one of the spots left in my to-do travel list. But I have seen the pictures and I am in awe of the pristine beauty of nature. Looking at Grand Prismatic Spring, I felt an urge to capture that image somewhere in my crochet creations.
I couldn’t bring out everything of that beauty to present in my works, so I decided to look for the yarn that will give me a starting point for the design.
The Lion Brand’s Heartland Yarn was closest to my expectation and had just the right shade I wanted. A colour paints just the right effect of the Yellowstone. No wonder why the yam manufacturer also named it Yellowstone as it captures that tint. It inspired me to make Yellowstone Microbial Mats as a fashion accessory.
It was indeed ‘love after the first project’. The appreciation for the colour and material grew and as the next challenge, I wanted to enhance its beauty further. So what shall be the right product, A beanie? A warmer? A shrug? I decided to go with a beanie with but I was clueless about the pattern that would make my vision a reality. After numerous hits and trials, I went with a Ribbed beanie design.
I call it Section Ribbed to suggest that part of the beanie (the body) is ribbed.
Process:
The process of creating this pattern is very simple; using Top-bottom approach. I am defining the base first and continuing downwards in rounds. The pattern is using Double Crochet Stitch (DC), Front Post Double Crochet Stitch (FPDC), Single Crochet (SC) and Slip Stitch (SLST).
Pattern:-
BASE:
Starting with a Magic Circle, Ch 2, 12 DC; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 12.
R1: Ch 2, 2DC in each DC; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 24.
R2: Ch 2, * DC in DC, 2DC in next DC*; repeat –; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 36.
R3: Ch 2, DC in 2 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat –; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 48.
R4: Ch 2, DC in 3 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat –; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 60.
Note: For a child-size beanie, you can stop at R4 and continue with the Body.
R5: Ch 2, DC in 4 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat –; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 72.
Note: At this level, the diameter of the base should be 6″-6 1/4″ for an adult beanie. To make a large size head, you can increase by 12 in the next row and then start with the body.
BODY:
R1: Ch 2, FPDC on DC, SC in next DC; repeat – till the end; join at the 1st FPDC with SLST. Total 72.
Repeat R1 to get the desired length.
Note: For a tighter edge, add a row of SC.
Caution Section:-
- To create the slouch, increase the height of the beanie to more than 10″ but do not exceed 13″-14″.
- The thickness and elasticity of the yarn may affect the diameter of the base.
- The crochet hook recommended vs the crochet hook used defines the design.
- The diameter of the base should be 6″-6 1/4″ for an adult beanie. To make a large size head, you can increase by 12 in the next row and then start with the body.
- Concentrate on the base diameter of the beanie and increase or decrease the rows. Generally, for any adult beanie 60-84, DC is suitable. 72 count is ideal for medium head size for men and medium to large head size for women.
- Keep measuring the circumference and the height to avoid frogging or rework.
Product Specifications:
Defining Dimensions:-
- Height: 9″
- Circumference: 22.5″
The sizes could be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.
[Note: The height of the hat is measured from the closed tip to the bottom when the hat is laid flat. ]
Optional Alterations:-
- You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
- This is a Unisex beanie. So in case you are using it as a female beanie, you can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
- You can attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
- You can put fur edging to give a different touch.
- For men, keep it simple. The colour selection should catch the eye.
Remember: Do not over-accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!
