Greenwood Dad-Son Beanie

Welcome to 2019. Are you making any resolutions this year? This year my resolution is no resolution. I already know what I have to do. So, this year I am just processing each day as it comes with my daily to-do list.

What I have noticed is the newspapers, Twitter accounts of Inc, HBR, Fast Company, Psychology Today etc. are focusing on time for self, me-time, less stress and better health.

We haven’t realised that slowly we have become dependent on the speed that anything that slows down is causing problems like frustration, agitation, anger, impatience, breathlessness and confused mind etc.

My 2-3 months break from daily routine of crocheting, blogging, knitting, selling, marketing, photo-editing, social selling, etc. gave a different perspective to proceed ahead.

In all the excitement to grow my brand – KMD, I forgot to include daily exercise in place. Weekend activities and everyday walking weren’t enough for me because my lifestyle has changed than it was during IT days.

So, take out the time for yourself and you will be free from all the negative impacts.

Process:

The process is bottom to top approach with basic crochet stitches. Starting with the brim of the hat using chain of 96 and continuing till the top of the hat. The stitches used are Single Crochet (SC), Double Crochet (DC), Slip Stitch (SLST), Chain Stitch (CH).

Pattern:-

DAD:

R1: CH 96; join at the 1st CH with SLST. Total 96 counts.

R2: CH 1, SC in every CH; join at the beginning of the 1st SC with SLST. Total 96 SC.

R3-R8: Repeat R2.

R9: CH 2, *DC in 1st SC, SC in next SC*; repeat *-* till the end; join at the beginning of 1st DC with SLST. Total 48 DC, 48 SC.

Note: The row will end with SC.

R10: CH 1, *SC in 1st DC, DC in next SC*; repeat *-* till the end; join at the beginning of the 1st SC with SLST. Total 48 SC, 48 DC.

Note: The row will end with DC.

Repeat R9-R10 till you get the desired length of the hat.

Sew the end as the top of the hat.

SON:

R1: CH 72; join at the 1st CH with SLST. Total 72 counts.

R2: CH 1, SC in every CH; join at the beginning of the 1st SC with SLST. Total 72 SC.

R3-R8: Repeat R2.

R9: CH 2, *DC in 1st SC, SC in next SC*; repeat *-* till the end; join at the beginning of 1st DC with SLST. Total 36 DC, 36 SC.

Note: The row will end with SC.

R10: CH 1, *SC in 1st DC, DC in next SC*; repeat *-* till the end; join at the beginning of the 1st SC with SLST. Total 36 SC, 36 DC.

Note: The row will end with DC.

Repeat R9-R10 till you get the desired length of the hat.

Sew the end as the top of the hat.

Caution Section:-

  1. Depending upon the bulky or chunkiness of the overall hat, select your yarn.
  2. Since I am using 2ply yarn or thin yarn, my counts for Dad and son beanies are more than usual worst weight yarn size.
  3. For worst weight yarns, you can start with 60 for son and 72 for dad.
  4. When joining at the beginning, make sure that the chain loop is not turned. This will avoid any stitch mistakes in future.
  5. My brim rows are 6 to get 1.5″ height. You can go with 4 rows or more.
  6. For the pattern, if your row is starting with DC then it should end with SC. Similarly, if you are starting with SC, the end stitch should be DC.
  7. Make a note that DC and SC are alternate around. Means follow DC and SC sequence alternatively in every row. Also, follow DC in SC, SC in DC while growing vertically.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Height: 9″
  • Circumference: 22.5″

The sizes could be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

[Note: The height of the hat is measured from the closed tip to the bottom when the hat is laid flat. ]

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
  • This is a Unisex beanie. So in case you are using it as a female beanie, you can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • Attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • Put fur edging to give a different touch.
  • For men, keep it simple. The colour selection should catch the eye.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!
