Winter/Fall Seasoned Crochet Fuchsia Tweed Fall Beanie Free Pattern - Knot My Designs

Fuchsia Tweed Fall Beanie

What do you do with the leftover yarns? I am sure each of us wants to utilise every inch of the yarn possible and present our craft in the most stylish way.

For me, the most challenging part of crocheting or in the world of craft is – reusing the leftovers. How to pick the stitching method which will not only bring out a new pattern or a new version of the existing pattern but also enhance the quality of the yarn along with providing an elegant product.

I love to challenge myself in such instances. I love to push my mind to think different, think more creative in every aspect. In this blog, I am presenting one of those experiments.

In this case, the challenge was the quantity.  I wasn’t sure about the size and the length and I had assumed it to long enough for a beanie. But, I ran short of the colour and thus, as you can see I used two colours and simply combined them into a body and brim model. VOILA! a new beanie.

Process:

The process of creating this pattern is very simple. Using top-bottom approach, I am defining the base first and continuing downwards in rounds. The pattern is using Double Crochet Stitch (DC), Single Crochet (SC) and Slip Stitch (SLST).

Pattern:-

BODY:

Starting with a Magic Circle, Ch 2, 12 DC; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 12.

R1: Ch 2, 2DC in each DC; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 24.

R2: Ch 2, * DC in DC, 2DC in next DC*; repeat ; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 36.

R3: Ch 2, DC in 2 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 48.

R4: Ch 2, DC in 3 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 60.

Note: for a child size beanie, you can stop at R4 and continue with the Body.

R5: Ch 2, DC in 4 DC, 2 DC in next DC; repeat ; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 72.

Note: at this level, the diameter of the base should be 6″-6 1/4″ for an adult beanie. To make a large size head, you can increase by 12 in next row and then start with the body.

BRIM:

R1: Ch 2, DC on each DC; repeat till the end; join at the 1st DC with SLST. Total 72.

Repeat R1 to get the desired length.

Note: For a tighter edge, add a row of SC.

Caution Section:-

  1. To create the slouch, increase the height of the beanie to more than 10″ but do not exceed 13″-14″.
  2. The thickness and elasticity of the yarn vary the diameter of the base.
  3. The crochet hook recommended vs the crochet hook used defines the design.
  4. The diameter of the base should be 6″-6 1/4″ for an adult beanie. To make a large size head, you can increase by 12 in next row and then start with the body.
  5. Concentrate on the base diameter of the beanie and increase or decrease the rows. Generally, for any adult beanie 60-84, DC is suitable. 72 count is ideal for medium head size for men and medium to large head size for women.
  6. Keep measuring the circumference and the height to avoid frogging or rework.

Product Specifications:

Defining Dimensions:-

  • Height: 9″
  • Circumference: 22.5″

The sizes could be altered based on the count of the stitches for the rows.

[Note: The height of the hat is measured from the closed tip to the bottom when the hat is laid flat. ]

Optional Alterations:-

  • You can increase the base diameter to give a more slouchy feel. Also, increase the height of the beanie.
  • This is a Unisex beanie. So in case you are using it as a female beanie, you can add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
  • You can attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
  • You can put fur edging to give a different touch.
  • For men, keep it simple. The colour selection should catch the eye.

Remember: do not over accessorize it. This hides the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!
