Crochet C2C Checkered Lap Blanket Pattern - Knot My Designs

C2C Checkered Lap Blanket

As creators and art-loving individuals, our objective is to create a magnificent product, which is loved and cherished throughout its lifetime. But bringing out quality within a given period of time can put us under pressure. To solve this problem, seasoned crocheters have invented corner-to-corner stitch pattern.

The pattern is very simple and involves Double crochet, slip stitch and chains, but the rich and intricate look that it gives out makes an impact and mesmerizes us. We can create any pixelated art into blankets or pillows or drapes using this stitching style. If you search for C2C or Corner-to-corner crochet stitch, you will be amazed to see the extent of interesting and unique creations. After learning the stitch, I fell in love with it.

The challenge for me was finishing the blankets within a 30 day time period and I could dedicate only 5 hours on a particular day for this. The problem compelled me to look for patterns that will meet my requirements and benchmark. Moreover, I was inclined to use C2C for blankets as home decor. The graphghans (graph afghans), or pixel art blankets are specifically targeted for kids rooms. After mulling for over a week, I decided to make a Chessboard graph.

However, I was unaware of the quantity of wool required to complete the project. Since, I had 12 balls of taupe and green colour yarn balls, (each 50gms) bought for an adult throw, my concern was completing the chessboard graph even before I run out of yarn. As a solution, I decided to make a square swatch first using 1 ball of each taupe and green colour. Depending on the amount, I continued making squares of each ball. After completing 10 balls, I estimated the pattern and number of squares required.

Process:

The pattern is corner-to-corner(C2C) crochet. There is a total of 30 square blocks of 2 colours. Square blocks of 9″ each is made using taupe and green colour wool. Each square block is worked diagonally.

Corner-to-corner crochet is always worked diagonally. For any square block, the stitch is increased diagonally and then decreased to form a square. For more information, check out the video.

Each block of green and taupe colour is sewed using Invisible Stitch alternatively.

Note: I stitched horizontally and then vertically (at one go) to avoid any knots and joints. I laid the square pieces and measured the yarn required to sew. With additional 4-5″ to the measured length, I started sewing the squares.

Pattern:-

The pattern can be divided into 2 sections.

  1. Taupe Square
  2. Green Square

Taupe Square:-

C2C¹ crochet one square block of taupe for 15 times. Then start decreasing C2C crochet to end the square.

Make 15 such square blocks.

Green Square:-

C2C¹ crochet one square block of green for 18 times. Then start decreasing C2C crochet to end the square.

Make 15 such square blocks.

¹C2C crochet stitch:

  • [Chain 6.
  • R1: Double Crochet (DC) in 4th chain from the hook. 2 DC in next 2 chains. [ 1st corner block is made]
  • R2: turn the work, chain 6. DC in 4th chain from the hook. 2 DC in next 2 chains.  Slip stitch on the chain 3. (Chain 3, 3 DC) in the same chain 3 space of the previous row. [2nd row contains 2 blocks]
  • R3: Repeat R2 ]

²Decreasing C2C crochet stitch

  • [turn the last row. slip stitch on 1st DC, 2nd DC, 3 DC.
  • Slip Stitch(SL ST) chain 3 space. (Chain 3, 3 DC) in same chain 3 space.
  • Continue (SL ST, chain 3, 3 DC) in next chain 3 space.
  • Repeat till the last 2nd block. SL ST in the last chain 3 space. ]

Caution Section:-

  1. The selection of the yarns is important. The thickness and elasticity of the yarn and the chosen crochet hook determines the design.
  2. Also, your technique impacts the smoothness or finished look. Everyone has different technique ranging from tight stitching style to medium to loose stitching styles.
  3. In case, you are unable to get the required chosen coloured yarn of same thickness, you can change the crochet hook and your technique as you go around, to get the seamless look. For me, I chose 2 different crochet hook and used the same technique.
  4. The wool gauge of taupe and green is different. To get the square of 9″ each the no. of stitches are decreased or increased.
  5. The Crochet hook is also changed based on the wool. For taupe, 5.5mm hook is used. For green, 5mm hook is used.
