Just another day of monsoon; rain shower; howling wind, and I am staring out the window wondering who has turned the shower on.
Can anyone switch off this rain shower and bring back the bright sun?
Desperately, waiting for the bean of light to peek out of the clouds. The clean pollution-free air, glistening trees and buildings, as if someone just painted pictures. I let my eyes drift away to a moraine – lateral formed by the accumulation of rocks or debris previously carried along by a glacier.
The sight of lateral ridges; the flowing stream and the snow-capped mountains led into another layer of the subconscious. I mentally started designing a textured pattern in the continuity of layers. Another cable version of the beanie with horizontal layers. I am naming it as Moraine Adult Beanie.
Process:
The process is very simple. The final outcome is a rectangle where the breadths are sewn together form beanie and one of the long sides is closed off to make the top of the beanie. The stitches used are Front Post Double Crochet (FPDC), Back Post Double Crochet (BPDC), Double Crochet (DC), Front Post Treble Crochet (FPTC), Single Crochet (SC), Slip Stitch (SL ST).
Sew at the top to make the slouchy hat.
Note: The initial chain should be multiples of 6. This chain length will define the height of the beanie.
R1: Chain 42+6, DC on a 3rd loop of the chain, DC in all next chain loops. Total = 46 DC.
R2: Ch 1, BPDC, 2FPDC, 4BPDC ;repeat – till you have 3 DC left; 2FPDC, BPDC. Total = 16FPDC, 30 BPDC
R3: Ch 1, FPDC, 2BPDC, skip 2 stitches, 2FPTC, from behind FPTC on skipped 2 stitches *; repeat *- till you have 3 stitches left; 2BPDC, FPDC. Total = 28 FPTC, 2 FPDC, 16 BPDC.
R4: repeat R2 and R3 till you get the desired circumference.
Join the ends with slip st in each stitch. Sew one opening of the beanie as the top of the hat.
To give a defined look to the edge, Ch 1, 2SC in every horizontal PDC till the end; join the ends with a slip stitch.
Below are a few representations of the work how it will progress.
Caution Section:-
- Depending upon the bulky or chunkiness of the overall hat, select your yarn.
- The stitch pattern may be intermediate for beginners but if you have worked on the cables before then it is an easy pattern to follow.
- I have used 4ply yarn to give a slimmer cabled look. The chunky wool running horizontally might give a vague look and make your head look short.
- These cable patterns are best for 2ply to 4ply yarn for the slim and ornamental appearance of the beanie or hat.
- For FPTC, remember to loosely stitch as it will shrink the height of the beanie and interrupt the smooth flow of the cable.
- If you are not certain with the tension then use a bigger hook for FPTC stitches and a smaller hook for rest of the stitches.
- For the seamless edge, make sure there are 2 SC for every post stitch.
Product Specifications:
Defining Dimensions:-
Circumference: 22″
Height: 9″
Optional Alterations:-
- Add pom-pom matching the colour with the edging or the base colour. There are different ways to create pom-pom.
- Attach flowers, beads or a bow made of crochet, plastic, suede leather etc to give cuteness to the hat.
- Put fur edging or tassels to give a different touch.
Remember: do not over accessorize it. This takes away the beauty of the pattern itself. Believe in elegant simplicity!!
