Tough times are here for sure. But we all are humans and even though we are having difficult times we will find ways to make ourselves happy. You might be thinking; is she going to give a lecture about being happy or being resilient? I know that we all would have faced some silly occasions in our daily lives.
E.g. During morning status calls, someone forgot to switch off the camera of their devices and you got a sneak peek of him/her rubbing their eyes and trying to be active on the call 🙂 Or heard your parents calling you with your pet name and everyone in your team heard it 😀
I am sure there must be many such silly moments in your daily lives. Please do share if you have any awkward moments in the comments below.
Here, I’ll share mine. Well, I cannot point out that this happened in this phase. It started in January 2020 when I was getting back into my normal zone after a good vacation. My friend said that she wanted another beanie from me for her upcoming trip in March 2020. It has to be a blue shade. This year she is going with turquoise.
Luckily I had the turquoise blue yarn with me. We finalized the colour and I said that I would make a completely new design and it would be a surprise. (Do note that I have written surprise in bold. You’ll come to know the reason behind it). So, I started browsing my old patterns and thought to come up with a completely new pattern on my own.
I found out that I did learn how to make a Raspberry stitch or Bobble Stitch and simultaneously, I stumbled upon a knitted beanie using bobble stitch. This was my final moment. I started making this beanie in resemblance to the knitted pattern I saw. Unfortunately, I cannot share it with you all as I forgot where I got the beanie idea. But no issues, the pattern is there for you all to try it out.
This is October 2020, I finally completed the beanie. I did finish writing the pattern with pictures too. And the funny part is that it is still a surprise to her!!! (:D) LOL!!!
This surprise will be over when she checks out that I shared the pattern and pictures even before she got the chance to try it out!
So me silly, sharing this moment hoping to bring a big smile to my friend and you all.
Process:
In this process, I am making a Bobble stitch. In the overall pattern, I am using Single Crochet (SC), Slip Stitch (SLST), Back-loop Slip Stitch (BLOSLST), and Double Crochet (DC). This hat is made bottom to top in one stretch without cutting the yarn or rejoining till the end where you sew your hat. So let’s get started.
I have divided the pattern into 3 parts Brim, Body and Base to distinguish the design change as I proceed ahead. Also, if you closely notice then you will find that I have changed my crochet hook size. My yarn wasn’t that stretchy and I was not able to make loose stitches so I used a bigger hook for the brim and a smaller hook for body and base.
Bobble stitch: Here we pretend to do DC but instead of completing the whole DC, we leave the last part on the loop.
Partial DC -(Yarn over on the stitch and pull through, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook, leave the rest loops on the hook). You will have 2 loops on the hook.
Continue partial DC to a total of 4 times to get 5 loops on the hook.
Yarn over and pull all the 5 loops. Tighten this stitch to make a cute little Bobble.
BRIM:-
R1: Start with Chain Stitch (CH) up to 20 counts; turn. Total 21 counts.
R2: From 2nd CH on the loop, BLOSLST on every chain loop; turn. Total 20 counts.
Repeat R2 till you get the desired circumference. I made 80 rows in total as I am using 5mm crochet hook.
Join the 2 ends by using SC on Back loop of the 1st end closest to you and Front loop of the 2nd end that is farthest. Chain 1. SC on the top of every BLOSLST to get the same number of rows. In my case it was 80 SC; joining the 1st SC with SLST.
BODY:-
R1: SC on 1st stitch, Bobble stitch on next stitch, 3 SC on next 3 stitches, * Bobble stitch on next stitch, 3 SC on next 3 stitches*; repeat *-* till you have 3 stitches left; Bobble stitch on the next stitch and 2 SC on last 2 SC of previous row.
R2: Insert a stitch marker at the beginning of the row. SC on every SC throughout the row.
R3: Place the stitch marker from the previous row to this row. SC around.
R4: Repeat R3.
R5: Insert a stitch marker, 2 SC on the next 2 stitches, Bobble stitch on next stitch (this bobble stitch should be in between of the bobbles od previous row), 3 SC on next 3 SC; repeat – till you have 2 stitches left; Bobble stitch in next stitch and SC in the last stitch of the row.
R6: Place the stitch marker from the previous row to this row. SC around.
R7-R8: Repeat R6 for 2 rows.
R9: Remove your stitch marker from below row and add in the current row. SC on 1st stitch, Bobble stitch on next stitch (this bobble stitch should be in between of the bobbles od previous row), 3 SC on next 3 SC; repeat – till you have 3 stitches left on the row; Bobble stitch on the next stitch and 2 SC on the 2 SC of previous row.
Repeat R2-R9 till you have good 8-inch height.
BASE:-
R1: Move the stitch marker from the previous row to the current row. SC on every stitch around. Repeat this for another 3 more rows to get a height 1 inch. This can be between 1-2 inches. Here you are saving the yarn as this will be used up while sewing the top.
Caution Section:-
- While working on the base make sure your counts are in multiples of 10.
- When you work on BLOSLST try to keep your stitches loose to make it stretchable. If tight or even medium tight stitches are made then the beanie base will be tighter than the body and it might not fit correctly.
- The elasticity of the yarn is completely dependent on the stitch style. If the elasticity is more then you can make medium tight stitch else you should opt for loose stitch.
- To get this appearance, use simple straight yarn and light colour.
- It is worked in rounds which can shrink the circumference a bit.
- The technique i.e. loose stitch or tight stitch also determines the size and look of the beanie.
- SC can form tighter beanie. Thus your stitches have to be loose or casual but not like BLOSLST.
